Description

Elevation Community Land Trust ( ECLT ) is a growing, innovative non-profit with a mission of providing permanently affordable homeownership opportunities to low and moderate income families across Colorado. We are currently seeking a Chief Financial Officer ( CFO ) who will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and financial oversight that leads ECLT s drive toward financial efficiency, scalability, and rapid growth. The ideal candidate will have experience in negotiating public and private partnerships, managing complex financing structures, and in real estate and development finance. This position reports directly to ECLT s President and CEO.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and entrepreneurial problem-solver to build a financial structure and team from the ground up, and to leave a legacy of opportunity for generations of Coloradoans. ECLT is at a critical juncture in its evolution, as the organization transitions from a start-up LLC under Urban Land Conservancy ( ULC ), which currently provides back-office support and technical assistance, to a stand-alone 501(c)3 with its own internal systems and governance in January 2021.

The CFO will work collaboratively throughout the organization, while simultaneously providing leadership for ECLT s financial strategy, building lender relationships, and leading the organization in leveraging public and philanthropic investments and additional income streams to maximize ECLT s impact for Colorado communities. Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

Finance and Compliance:

  • Provide leadership, supervision and oversight over day-to-day financial operations
  • Working with ULC s VP of Finance and Administration, transition ECLT accounting functions in-house; select and manage the installation of accounting software appropriate to ECLT s business model
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures
  • Develop a financial plan that will allow ECLT to achieve its goals and objectives, including operational sustainability
  • Develop, implement, and maintain fiscal operating procedures that ensure the procurement, protection, and maintenance of ECLT assets
  • Establish controls, policies, and procedures to comply with all applicable grant, contract, and legal requirements; collaborate with department leadership on funding requests, program implementation, and funding source reporting requirements
  • Maintain reporting and compliance systems required by lenders, local, state and federal funding sources as well as the ECLT Advisory Committee and ULC Board of Directors and/or Finance Committee
  • Provide direction and assistance to other departments regarding accounting and budgeting policies, procedures, control and efficient utilization of financial resources
  • Oversee budget-to-actual variances monthly; ensure operational expenditures are within budget and receive necessary approvals
  • Prepare for and coordinate the external audit and tax return
  • Oversee and lead the annual budget process in conjunction with departments and the President and CEO
  • Supervise contracted accounting personnel

Operations:

  • Partner with ECLT leadership to establish ECLT as a standalone 501(c)3 by January 2021 including the transition of financial accounting and oversight, human resource management, and board leadership
  • Oversee strategic financial structuring including financial packaging of equity, debt, grants and public investment for all acquisitions and development projects
  • Manage organizational cash flow as it relates to directing ECLT s use of capital to meet Operations, Real Estate (acquisitions) and Stewardship (sales) goals
  • Collaborate with other departments (CEO, Legal, Operations, Real Estate, Stewardship) as needed to provide financial strategy and analyses of ECLT s portfolio, development projects, pipeline projections and public and private investments

General:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the community land trust model and the resale formula
  • Maintain an understanding of community issues that impact ECLT work, i.e. affordable housing, workforce development, social enterprises, government funding programs, etc.
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning and goal setting
  • Provide leadership and support to Board and Committees

Education:

  • Bachelor s degree in finance, economics, public administration, real estate, nonprofit management, or related field
  • MBA or CPA preferred

Experience:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience with a proven record as a creative, results-oriented leader who delivers results
  • Experience at an early stage company or nonprofit organization
  • Expertise in real estate finance required
  • Proven success in growing businesses as a financial strategy leader

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge and comfort in working with various technologies including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Must possess a passion and commitment for affordable housing, community development, real estate, homeownership, and ECLT s mission
  • Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow
  • Outstanding ability to present complex financial information to a variety of audiences
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
  • A commitment to maintain strict confidentiality

Requirements

  • Must pass a background check
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and demonstrate a good work ethic
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for up 50% of scheduled work hours

Compensation/Benefits

Salary range: $110,000-$140,000 is commensurate with depth of experience and overall qualifications. ECLT also offers a generous benefit package that includes health/dental/vision coverage, life, 401k, and paid time off.
