POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director, Advisory Services, will join a growing team of professionals who collaborate to execute the Advisory Services program at the Urban Land Institute. Currently, the team is composed of six collaborative individuals. This position would be a new team member, who would report to the Vice President, Advisory Services, and would be broadly responsible the following:

  • Serving as a Program Manager on specific panels for the Advisory Services program. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following: recruiting panelists, scoping and collaborating with panel sponsors, collaborating internally within ULI on logistical matters, staffing panel assignments on site, writing and editing reports, organizing project analysis sessions, and assisting in other day-to-day activities of the programs. The candidate will also support specialized content projects within ULI, as needed. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following: providing support on specialized Content projects as needed and directed, and collaborating internally within ULI and, externally, with ULI members, as appropriate.
  • Serving as the lead on a special project within the Advisory Services team related to systems management. As the work program and staff of the Advisory Services team grows, it is becoming imperative that the team streamline our process to make our program delivery more efficient. Tasks include, but may not be limited to, the following: supporting the Vice President in thinking creatively about systems management and delivery, researching and testing different organizational platforms, and identifying and phasing in implementation strategies. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Serve as the Project Manager for individual Advisory Services assignments.
• Recruit panelists to participate in panels.
• Staff Advisory Services assignments on site. Work with the panel chair to carry out the assignment and assist, as needed, in writing the report.
• Collaborate internally within ULI’s Logistics team to ensure that on-site panels are a seamless experience for members.
• Substantively edit reports and other Advisory Services products and assist in the production of the reports.
• Work with the Vice President and internally within ULI to create and establish efficient and effective systems to manage and track the growing Advisory Services program of work.
• Write articles for ULI publications and participate in other research, education, and publications projects on an occasional basis.
• Other duties as assigned.

INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: The Director candidate will maintain close coordination within the Advisory Services team on all issues related to advisory panels, as well as work with members of other ULI teams to build cross-organizational support for and efficiency of the Advisory Services program.

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: The candidate will work on a continuous basis with representatives of public, nonprofit, and private organizations that are interested in sponsoring Advisory Services assignments as well as members of the public, organizations, and the media who are involved in the panel process. The candidate will work closely with ULI leadership who chair the panel assignments and with numerous members invited to serve on panel assignments. The Candidate will also develop, nurture, and maintain relationships with ULI members in order to continue building the bench of potential panelists.

EXPERIENCE:
• Five to seven years’ experience in public and/or private land use planning and real estate development.
• Demonstrated experience in writing, editing, and producing high-quality reports.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the following: public and private planning and development process, municipal government, real estate market issues, equity issues as they relate to land use, land economics, public utilities, transportation,
housing, urban design, sustainable development, and similar subjects.
• Working knowledge and experience with one or more of the following: member management systems, project management systems, and network management systems.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to work on several projects at once, and to manage competing priorities.
• The ability to facilitate groups with diverse viewpoints and form consensus within a predetermined amount of time.
• Knowledge of and ability to manage graphics and report production preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Working knowledge of and experience with one or more of the following: member management systems, project management systems, and/or network management systems.
• Valid driver’s license and demonstrated comfort traveling to and navigating new places.
• A passion for inquiry.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• A valid U.S. driver’s license.
• Domestic and international airline travel.
• Up to 40 percent of time in travel.

EDUCATION:
Desired: Master’s degree in urban planning, public policy, public administration, or real estate development, or comparable discipline/experience.
