“Oh, The Places You’ll Go”

The Cornell/SelectLeaders Job Barometer, for the first time ever, will include an analysis of specific skillsets employers required from 2006 to today. The increases in necessary computer software expertise and the changes in Real Estate software development over the years are remarkable. A preliminary glimpse was given by Dr. David Funk, Director of Cornell’s Baker Program in Real Estate, at this year’s 2014 CRE Career Summit. A Boutique Executive Search Recruiter then spoke about the “graying of our industry” and the number of 60 and 70 year-olds at the helm who are thinking about succession. The Head Hunter then told the students they will have decades to wait to be in charge, AND that online hiring only works for their first jobs. What’s he telling them, I thought, “29% of our jobs pay over $100,000 and 5% pay over $200,000? How old were Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg?” As the 60-something leaders bypass retirement by pairing up with those who have the necessary technology skillsets, our industry’s future leaders are being groomed (who may be the young people we met at the Fair). Or as another 60-something wrote: “The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
