Short On Infrastructure

A long list of major metros and second-tier cities vied for Amazon to select them for its second headquarters. A few weeks ago the long awaited announcement came giving the nod to Crystal City in Virginia and the Borough of Queens in NYC.

Elation quickly turned to protests, especially in New York where Queens residents violently complained that the $3 billion in “sweeteners” offered to Amazon were too costly. Rumbles also occurred in Virginia. What did not make as much news is the growing recognition that the infrastructure to support the extraordinary growth in both locations is inadequate.

One such example is in Queens where the FDNY fears that it will not be able to adequately support the neighborhood that will house Amazon. Along with the fire department, sanitation will also be an issue in a City where garbage bags already abound on most city streets. And the list goes on. Further west, Apple announced phenomenal expansion plans for Austin, Texas, a City that already suffers from an inadequate highway system.

While Washington shuts down the government over a border wall, the infrastructure of our cities is crumbling. We better get our act together, otherwise forecasted growth and expansion will be seriously compromised in most major urban centers.
