“You give us 22 minutes, and we’ll give you the world.” The first radio station to play Rock & Roll in the US, New York’s WINS10101 News, was off by a minute in their historic tag line. Today emails pop up on our screens while we work, messages ping to be answered, and 75% of offices moved to open layouts. We are all in the words of T.S. Elliot, “distracted from distraction by distraction”. So what is the price of all this openness? Apparently 23 minutes – studies published in The Week report that it takes 23 minutes to refocus on a task after being interrupted. It pays for employers to add or carve out space for employees to get away from colleagues when they need to concentrate.
