In January 2018, SelectLeaders Hiring Trends Survey queried, “Have hurricanes, wildfires, nuclear threats, terror attacks, social unrest impacted your company’s revenue?” 25% reported a decline. Fast forward to 2020, and our Sales Director is shouting, “Hold the phone, a devastating tornado, hit Dallas, Texas. California just shut off all their electric power for another week. Alabama just followed. Blizzard in September in the Mid-West.” I remember our Florida Sales Manager posting jobs for an HR Director, who was running out to evacuate her children. A striking statistic by FEMA pointed out a small business which sustains downtime due to a natural disaster has only a 60% chance of surviving. That means four out of ten businesses who experience loss of business will not reopen their doors. Our industry is there to rebuild and it’s time for major incentives to build-to-withstand. Are power lines built above ground just because it is less expensive? Burying them is one added tax, I would be happy to pay.
